The look and style of your Garage Door
The primary consideration in planning your garage door is what material to use. There are
3 main materials for garage door construction: Wood, Steel and Fiberglass; which one you select depends on the style of
your home, your budget and how warm you want your garage to be.
When you're planning to install a garage door, you can consider options like heated garages or unique windows.
The Most Popular Style is the Overhead Garage Door. They have a big advantage over tilting or hinged systems in that
there is no risk of damaging a car parked too close to the garage door. They are automatic, easy to use and usually have
good safety features. The Overhead garage door rolls up and stores along the roof of the garage. Overhead
door features to look for are that they are smooth, quiet and compact. It is possible to install an overhead garage
door yourself, but most people prefer for the supplier to arrange installation.. Popular garage door manufacturers include
Garaga, Liftmaster, Raynor or DBCI.
The Appeal of Wood
Wooden garage doors are desirable yet relatively affordable. Not
all timbers are durable, so for a durable garage door select solid cedar, which will last for years and keep looking
wonderful. Sections of roll-up wooden doors may have either panel or flush construction. For panel doors, manufacturers
fit several separate, rectangular panels into a wooden frame. Flush sections are made by fastening a plywood panel
on top of a wooden frame.
Unless you are using cedar, the main disadvantage of a wooden garage door is that wood expands and contracts and can warp
or crack as it weathers. It demands refinishing every couple of years to keep it looking good and in
top condition. |
